Thinking of naming a heather? Read on.
By registering your name, it means that no-one else can use that name for a heather.
The Heather Society is part of a world-wide network of International Cultivar Registration Authorities (ICRAs) which play a vital role in promoting uniformity, accuracy and stability in the naming of cultivated plants. It is a non-statutory, voluntary process which benefits the whole horticultural community. ICRAs are appointed by the International Society for Horticultural Science through its Commission for Nomenclature and Registration. For a full list of ICRA's, click here.
The Heather Society is the ICRA for Andromeda, Calluna, Daboecia and Erica and has produced a full International Register for Heathers in two volumes. Volume 1, in four parts covers Hardy Cultivars and European Species. Volume 2, also in four parts, covers all African Erica species, hybrids and cultivars.
The naming of cultivars is controlled by the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants - 2004 (ICNCP).
Under this code new names must be unique

· may not be capable of confusion, when either written or spoken, with
any other cultivar name within each genus

· may not include more than 30 characters excluding
spaces and single quotation marks.
For more details check out the ICNCP website http://www.ishs.org/sci/icra.htm
